From October 2007 Nantycaws Landfill Site is only able to accepted treated Non Hazardous Wastes
Hazardous waste is a waste that shows one or more of the 14 identified hazards such as being flammable, toxic, corrosive etc.,
Nantycaws Landfill can receive Non- Hazardous which include Inert Wastes…..
All waste inputs to Nantycaws landfill MUST be TREATED… However there are two (2) exceptions:
1. Inert waste where treatment is not feasible
2. Wastes other than inert where treatment does not reduce quantity or if treatment poses a hazard to human health or to the environment
Examples of waste that would have been treated:
- Builders rubble from the demolition of a building where timber, metal and plasterboard has been kept separate
- Wastes derived from C A Sites
Treatment means:
1. Physical, thermal, chemical or biological process (sorting is included)
2. Change of characteristic of wastes i.e.
- Reduce Volume
- Reduce hazardous nature
- Facilitate its handling
- Enhance its recovery
Activities that DO NOT meet the definition of treatment include:
- Compaction
- Placing waste in a container
- Mixing the waste without any chemical changes
- Shredding waste
The easiest way for producers of waste to meet the pre-treatment regulations is to segregate their waste at source.
All of the ‘Treated’ waste received at Nantycaws Landfill for disposal MUST be characterised this includes:
Written evidence of treatment
OR
Reasons why treatment was not possible
Pre Treatment can be included on the Waste Transfer Note (WTN) or can be declared separately
IT IS ILLEGAL FOR A LANDFILL OPERATOR TO ACCEPT
UNTREATED WASTES TO LANDFILL
CWM has a Duty of Care to ensure that waste is properly managed.
