Background of CWM Environmental Limited
CWM Environmental Ltd (CWM) is a wholly owned subsidiary of the authority established in 1997under the 1990 EPA Act
CWM was set up by Carmarthenshire County Council as Local Authority Waste Disposal Company (LAWDC) to manage the waste disposal in the County.
Its initial purpose was to manage the disposal of the County’s municipal wastes to landfill but in line with the recycling targets set by European legislation CWM has increased the percentage of materials being diverted from landfill.
The Landfill Directive (1999/31/EC) which was adopted by the European Union in 1999, stipulates that the amount of waste disposed at landfill must reduce in combination with the increase of recovery, recycling and re-use of waste materials. In response to this CWM Environmental established a subsidiary company in 2003 called, Carmarthenshire Recycling Company Limited to manage and promote the County’s recycling.
In 2009 CWM has taken a dynamic approach to the waste management industry in recognition of the ever changing legislation, perceptions and reality that waste and recycling are not two separate identities but rather together they form a valuable resource which in its totality requires management.
We are going forward as one total waste management company that will encompass all waste management and recycling under the same identity namely, CWM Environmental Limited. We manage the entire waste streams that pass through our Landfill, Transfer Stations, Materials Recycling Facility and the County’s Household Waste Recycling Centres to provide a first class service to the municipal and commercial sectors.
Our aim is to divert as much waste as possible from landfill. CWM take a proactive stance in meeting, greeting, educating and offering a service which enables optimisation for the recovery of recyclable materials. This Company has achieved growth and recognition both within the community and on a national level.
