Nantycaws Landfill Site
Nantycaws landfill site provides an option for the disposal of residual waste in Carmarthenshire and its immediate environs. CWM Environmental Ltd. fully understands and supports through ancillary activities the progressive statutory and regional initiatives to reduce, recycle, reuse and pre treat municipal, commercial and industrial wastes. However, it is envisaged that there will always remain a regional need to cater for the landfilling of this diminishing final fraction. The company objective is to ensure the provision of a professionally managed facility to cater for its customers needs.
Directions
The site is located approximately 8 km to the east of Carmarthen on the A48 and lies 1.5 km to the south-east of the small village of Nantycaws.
Site Licence
The site is licensed under:
The Pollution Prevention and Control (England and Wales) Regulations 2000
Landfill (England and Wales) Regulations 2002
Permit Number - CP3735PB
Site Inputs
The site is authorised to accept a maximum of 150,000 tonnes of non hazardous waste per annum. All vehicles depositing waste must report to the weighbridge in the first instance.
Environmental Controls
Landfill Gas
Buried biodegradable organic waste (such as food and paper) decomposes by anaerobic microbial action which produces landfill gas.
The gas generated at the Nantycaws Site is drawn off and converted to energy. An active gas management system operates at the site. Landfill gas is passively vented to the surface through a series of gas vents and a perimeter gas collector and then pumped to an on site Waste to Energy Plant. The current system will be extended as the landfill continues to develop.
Leachate
During the operational life of the site the arising leachate is collected from the wastes by a series of gravity drains that transport the leachate to cell sumps. The leachate is then removed from the sumps to a holding lagoon prior to being tankered away for off site treatment / disposal.
Monitoring
The site maintains and implements an emissions monitoring programme which ensures that emissions are monitored from specified points, for parameters listed in and to the frequencies and methods described in the site ‘Permit’. All monitoring data is reported back to the Environment Agency.
