WHY Do We Recycle?
We recycle to reduce the amount of waste that ends up at landfill. We should re-use where possible those items that when buried in a landfill will be wasted forever.
The majority of manufactured items are produced from an organic source, recycling this material will enable raw products such as trees, oil, ore, iron, bauxites, sand plus many other smaller parts/trace elements not to be used to exhaustion.
The Earth is not expanding. The consequences of utilising all of our raw resources along with landfilling our disused material could prove disastrous for future generations. This has been recognised under the European Landfill Directive of 2002 which has set targets of decreasing the amount of biodegradable material that ends up at landfill with a commitment to Re-use, Recover and Recycle as much of our waste as possible. This can only be achieved through the involvement of everyone in the process chain.
WHAT Can We Recycle?
Many things can be Recycled, Recovered or Re-used. The main materials are:
· Paper which is turned back into paper for the newspaper industry
· Cardboard is turned back into cardboard
· Steel Cans are melted down and can be remoulded back into steel cans
· Aluminium Cans are melted down and can be processed back into Aluminium products
· Glass is re-ground and used in the building industry it can also be used in road making, golf courses, and re-processed back for glass use again
· Plastics can be re-processed to manufacture many things from plastic bottles, clothes, toys, car and aeroplane parts etc.,
WHERE Can We Take It?
CWM Environmental has a Materials Recovery Facility in Johnstown, Carmarthen. CWM Environmental currently recycle products collected via the kerbside blue bag scheme by Carmarthenshire County Council along with Trade recycling which is either delivered directly or forms part of the Trade Recycling Collection Services that are provided by our Company. Other materials are collected and transported from the Household Waste Recycling Centre’s that we manage in the County as well as materials delivered from Bring Sites that are spread throughout the County to provide the public with local facilities to dispose of their recyclable items.
Some of the segregated recycling materials collected on Household Waste Recycling Centre’s are transported directly for re-processing. Hazardous items such as paint, garden chemicals, batteries, oil and electrical items are sent to specialist re-processor for safe and compliant handling where they are either treated or broken down into individual recyclable elements which are then forwarded on to the correct re-processing manufacturer.
All of the recyclable products bought into the Materials Recovery Facility are recycled. It is only items that should not be in the kerbside collections that end up in the landfill.
WHEN Can We Recycle?
All our Household Waste Recycling Centre’s are open 363 days of the year and the bring sites are 24 hours 365 days per year. Site hours of operation can be viewed by clicking on the following Nantycaws Trostre Whitland Wern Ddu
