The future of resource and efficiency in the heart of Carmarthenshire

CWM Gwyrdd Nantycaws is the UK’s most ambitious circular economy development, combining large-scale green infrastructure with practical, community-rooted innovation. Spanning over 84 hectares, the project is transforming a former waste site into a thriving hub for resource recovery, renewable energy, low-carbon industry, and environmental regeneration.

A partnership between CWM Environmental Ltd and Carmarthenshire County Council, CWM Gwyrdd will deliver a powerful combination of economic growth, environmental impact, and public benefit. Cementing Carmarthenshire’s role as a leader in sustainability and the circular economy.

Enhanced Resource Recovery

Central to the site is a new state-of-the-art Resource Recovery Facility (RRF), which will open in winter 2025. The facility will process up to 80,000 tonnes of materials annually from across South and West Wales. It is designed to recover high-quality recyclable materials, reduce reliance on landfill and incineration, and support the region’s transition to a circular economy.

This will significantly expand local capacity for managing waste as a resource and support businesses and local authorities in meeting zero waste and Net Zero targets.

Circular Economy Manufacturing

A new Circular Economy Manufacturing Zone will be developed to turn recovered materials into new, high-value products. This area will support reuse-driven manufacturing across sectors such as construction, textiles, and design, transforming waste into concrete products, building materials, and reusable goods. By retaining value locally and reducing the demand for virgin materials, this facility will contribute to low-carbon production, supply chain resilience, and skills development in sustainable manufacturing.

Canolfan Eto: Europe’s Largest Reuse Village

Building on the success of Canolfan Eto, Wales’ first reuse village, the facility will expand to become Europe’s largest reuse hub. The expanded site will offer:

  • Repair and upcycling workshops
  • Retail space for pre-loved and repurposed goods
  • Training and volunteering opportunities
  • A centre for community engagement on sustainable living

The vision is to create a working model of circular living at scale, maximising the lifespan of everyday products and reducing waste across the region.

Renewable Energy Generation

The energy strategy at CWM Gwyrdd will deliver over 20mw of clean power, enabling the site to become fully self-sufficient and contributing excess energy back to the grid. A 2.5mw solar farm already has planning consent, and additional generation will come from wind infrastructure and battery storage. All energy used on-site, including for industrial facilities and EV charging, will come from renewable sources, making CWM Gwyrdd a low-carbon energy ecosystem supporting both businesses and public services.

Exploring Hydrogen Innovation

As part of our future-focused energy programme, we are planning for the integration of hydrogen infrastructure. This will support the development of clean fuel alternatives for transport and storage, and enable new partnerships with academic institutions and businesses leading innovation in the hydrogen sector.

Hydrogen offers a route to decarbonising sectors that are harder to electrify, and its inclusion in the park’s long-term plan ensures CWM Gwyrdd stays aligned with national clean energy priorities.

R&D and Academic Partnerships

CWM Gwyrdd will include a dedicated research and development cluster, developed in partnership with Prifysgol Abertawe (Swansea University) and Prifysgol Caerdydd (Cardiff University). This cluster will support innovation in

  • Material reuse and remanufacturing
  • Low-carbon design and production
  • Behavioural and social aspects of sustainable living

The site will also host on-site education and training delivery, ensuring the next generation of waste, energy, and green economy professionals are trained in a real-world, high-impact environment.

Light Industry Business Park

To meet the growing demand for flexible, modern workspace, a Light Industry Business Park will be developed as part of the wider site. This will cater to small and medium-sized businesses working in manufacturing, storage, assembly, and logistics.

The business park is designed to enable collaboration and innovation among green enterprises and will be powered entirely by the park’s own renewable energy infrastructure. It will directly address the current shortfall in industrial space across South West Wales.

EV Infrastructure for Transport and Logistics

Recognising the shift toward low-emission transport, the site will feature a comprehensive EV charging network. This infrastructure will support both:

  • Commercial fleets transitioning to electric vehicles
  • Public EV users looking for accessible charging points

All charging infrastructure will be powered by on-site renewable energy, helping reduce transport-related emissions and offering cost-effective, sustainable transport options for businesses and residents.

Biodiversity and Natural Access

Environmental restoration is a key component of CWM Gwyrdd’s vision. Over 10 acres of land are already dedicated to biodiversity, with plans to expand these zones to include:

  • New habitats and wildflower meadows
  • Green corridors for pollinators and local species
  • Over two miles of walking routes through restored natural areas

These improvements not only enhance local ecology but also create publicly accessible green space that promotes health, wellbeing and connection with nature.

Strategic Location and Connectivity

CWM Gwyrdd Nantycaws is ideally located for logistics and supply chain activity:

  • 15 minutes from the M4
  • Direct access to the A48
  • Close proximity to key ports at Milford Haven, Fishguard, Pembroke Dock and Port Talbot

This enables fast, efficient movement of materials and products across South and West Wales, while providing strong regional and national connectivity for partners and investors.

A Blueprint for Wales’ Circular Economy Future

CWM Gwyrdd Nantycaws is a vision for how Wales can lead the way in resource efficiency, low-carbon enterprise, and sustainable community infrastructure. With over 1,500 new jobs, Europe’s largest reuse village, and world-class energy systems, the project will deliver a measurable impact for decades to come.
